Wonderful Laos

laos_vientiane_9.jpg

Laos is the least populated country in South East Asia with a population of around 5.8million.  The country is deservedly getting much attention from western tourists who have come to realise that it is an absolutely stunning country inhabited by some of the nicest people you are likely to meet anywhere in the world.  Laoations are kind and gentle people who like to take things slow - real slow!

You can fly directly to the capital, Vientiane, with Vietnam Airlines, Thai or Air Asia from Kuala Lumpa.  There are also direct flights to Luang Prabang by Bangkok Airways.

There have been isolated incidents of tourists being attacked in remote areas, but by and large you are safe in Laos and should have no fears about visiting.

The biggest risk to tourists in Laos is from road traffic.  As the Laos tourist authority puts it "Lao people drive by putting their faith in the Lord Buddha. A road code exists but it is not respected so be careful, particularly when on a motor-bike."

Another risk in Laos is taking a Lao lady back to your hotel room.  It is forbidden by law and most hotels will not allow any visitors in your room.

Homosexuality is also not accepted in Laos though there is an emerging gay scene with younger gay Laoations more open about their sexuality whilst staying within the Asian expectation of modesty.

Laos is one of our favourite destinations and if you are thinking about a trip there then our advice to you is - do it!
