Maybe you have heard some 'scare stories' about Asia and your personal safety, health and money issues.  Well, the reality is that you will find the people of Asia to be friendly, kind and welcoming.

Travel Health

Travelling to different climates and environments abroad can expose you to disease and health risks, regardless of which country you are visiting. You should be aware of the dangers and how to stay healthy.

Diseases which aren’t present in the the United States, Europe and Australia, such as yellow fever, malaria and dengue fever are common in some parts of Asia.  Rabies can also be an issue.  However, with proper planning and preparation, you can minimise the risks and have a very enjoyable holiday where you can safely head of the beaten track.

Vaccinations and Immunisation

Visit your personal physician as soon as possible to check if you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures (such as malaria tablets).

You can also get health information specific to the country that you are visiting from reliable sources such as the website of the United Kingdom's Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

HIV/AIDS

In some parts of Asia the rate of infection from STDs can be very high, particularly amongst sex workers.  Some statistics put the rate of STD infection amongst Bangkok sex workers as high as 70%.  Amongst this will be an alarmingly high proportion of people infected with HIV/AIDS.  Whilst most people do not go on holiday looking for a relationship, it goes without saying that Asia is no different from any other part of the world - safe sex is essential to help prevent the spread of disease.  Condoms are readily available in Asia and are much cheaper than you will find in a western pharmacy.  So, no excuse for not being prepared in any moment of passion that overcomes you.  Once word of advice though - and this is not a boast.  Asian condom sizes appear to be smaller than western condoms, sometimes resulting a 'tight fit'.  So perhaps you should pack some condoms in your suitcase.

Avian & Pandemic Influenza (Bird Flu)

Over the years, the media has been full of stories about 'bird flu' and a pandemic that will wipe out millions of people.  Asia has been the centre of attention for 'bird flu' with most of the affected communities being in this continent.  The reality in 2008 is that the risk to humans remains low and there is no reason why you cannot come to Asian countries and have an enjoyable holiday whilst tucking in to some delicious fried chicken cooked by your favourite street vendor.

Medicines and Drugs

Medicines normally prescibed by your physician are freely available at pharamcies in Asia.  As with other countries you can buy generic drugs or the mainstream brand.  You can buy medication directly from the pharmacy without the need to see a physician first.

Most countries in Asia have a zero tolernace attitude to the use of drugs such as heroin, cocaine, ice, marijuana and even the 'poppers' used by gay men.  Despite this, you will find that these drugs are freely available.  Be warned - whilst the drugs are available and used extensively by some locals, it is illegal and you expose yourself to significant risks if you get caught purchasing or using drugs.  In places like Bangkok, it is not uncommon for the authorities to visit a busy nightclub and 'test' eveyone in the club to check whether they have used drugs.

Stay away from drugs and obey the laws of the country that you are in!

Cash and Valuables

Like any place that you visit, you should take some sensible precautions with your valuables and planned sightseeing.  Be aware that, as a tourist, you are seen as being wealthy and there will be people out to hustle you for cash and try to scam you.  Eveyone should know about the Bangkok gem scams or being harangued by a street trader in Vietnam or Cambodia.  You should not feel threatened by these scams.  Just be on your guard.  The worst that will likely happen to you is that you buy gems worth little, get a cheap suit that looks awful, or buy some gold jewellry that will turn green after three visits to the pool.

Don't trust anyone who approaches you with any special offer - especially around major tourist sites.  Just smile, say no thank you and be persistent in your refusal to take them up on their generous and never to be repeated offer.

My feeling is that dealing with the scams is part of an enjoyable holiday.  It is quite amusing to listen to someone trying to scam you and it makes a refreshing change from all those cheeky cockneys who try to get you to buy a timeshare in Greece or Spain.

Most hotels have a safety deposit box in the room - use it.  You can usually take someone back to your room, but make sure that they leave their ID card at the reception if you do.  This is particularly relevant if you are one of the old western gentlemen who think that the attractive young girl or young boy is interested in you for your good looks and charm.  Sadly, there are some stories of old men entertaining in their room only to find that their watch, wallet and camera have been misplaced when they look for them later.

Crime

Many tourists have been lured by the charm of a However, my experience has been that the crime level is much less than you would find in a western country and significantly less than you will read about in cities in the United States, United Kingdom and mainland Europe.

Hospitals, Dentists and Cosmetic Surgery

You pay for medical treatment in Asia and you will be asked for your payment arrangements before you are treated.  Travel Insurance that covers health treatment is essential here.

There are good medical facilities available in all of the big Asian cities and places like Bangkok have become a 'mecca' for those seeking high quality, cheap health care including cosmetic surgery and sex changes.  Cosmetic dentistry is also a mainstream business in Bangkok and many view the standard of dental care as significantly better than what you might find in the west.

Please remember that the above is just general guidance to help you plan your visit.  Check with your doctor and foreign ministry before your trip to make sure that you have covered all the bases.

We are sure that you will have a great holiday in Asia. Come and enjoy it.
